Background of the Study

Psychiatric emergencies, such as acute psychosis, suicidal behavior, and severe anxiety, require immediate and effective intervention to prevent harm to patients and others. Nurses in general hospitals often serve as first responders in these situations, making their preparedness crucial for patient safety and care quality. Training and readiness in managing psychiatric emergencies can significantly influence outcomes and the overall effectiveness of mental health services in general hospital settings.

In Kwara State, Nigeria, general hospitals are primary points of care for individuals experiencing psychiatric emergencies. Assessing nurses' preparedness in these settings is essential to identify gaps and inform targeted interventions to enhance care delivery.

Statement of the Problem

The increasing incidence of psychiatric emergencies in general hospitals necessitates that nurses possess adequate skills and knowledge to manage these situations effectively. Inadequate preparedness can lead to suboptimal patient outcomes, increased risk of injury, and heightened stress among healthcare providers. Evaluating the current state of nurses' preparedness in Kwara State's general hospitals is vital to inform training programs and policy development.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the current level of preparedness among nurses in handling psychiatric emergencies in general hospitals in Kwara State.

2. To identify factors influencing nurses' preparedness, including training, experience, and institutional support.

3. To recommend strategies to enhance nurses' readiness to manage psychiatric emergencies effectively.

Research Questions

1. What is the current level of preparedness among nurses in managing psychiatric emergencies in general hospitals in Kwara State?

2. What factors influence nurses' preparedness for handling psychiatric emergencies?

3. What strategies can improve nurses' readiness to manage psychiatric emergencies effectively?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses in general hospitals in Kwara State have varying levels of preparedness in handling psychiatric emergencies.

2. Factors such as specialized training, years of experience, and institutional support significantly influence nurses' preparedness.

3. Implementing targeted training programs and providing adequate resources will enhance nurses' readiness to manage psychiatric emergencies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in general hospitals across Kwara State, evaluating their preparedness to handle psychiatric emergencies. It will consider factors such as training, experience, and support systems. Limitations may include self-reported data biases and variability in hospital resources.
